Pool equipment rarely fails without warning. It gets louder, weaker, or leakier first — and in South Florida, where salt air and year-round run times are hard on hardware, those warnings show up sooner than most owners expect.
1. The pump is getting loud. A pump that has started screeching or grinding is usually telling you the bearings are going. Caught early that's a repair. Ignored, the motor fails and takes the whole unit with it.
2. Filter pressure keeps climbing. A pressure gauge reading well above your clean baseline means the filter is loaded and flow is restricted. If it climbs right back up after a backwash, the media or cartridges are done.
3. Weak return flow. If the water coming back into the pool has gone soft, you have a restriction, a leak on the suction side, or a pump that is losing its ability to move water. Poor circulation is also how algae problems start.
4. The pump loses prime or won't hold it. Air in the pump basket points to a suction-side leak — a lid o-ring, a valve, or a fitting. Air in the system means the pump is running dry in places it shouldn't.
5. Wet ground or drips at the equipment pad. Any consistent moisture around the pad is a leak, and leaks near electrical connections are a safety issue, not just a water-loss issue.
6. The heater short-cycles or won't fire. Heaters usually fail slowly — igniting late, cutting out early, throwing intermittent errors. Those symptoms are diagnosable long before the unit stops entirely.
7. The timer is drifting or the pool isn't running its full cycle. If circulation hours have quietly shortened, the water is being filtered less than you think, and chemistry gets harder to hold.
